UPDATE 3/27

Hi Universe and Facebook Folks, Here is the progress I have made the front and back of the coat is stiched in including  “the swishy part” as I like to call it. Sewing pattern called it Godot so yeah swishy part I think is more of a technical term;)

I also painted and cut the foam sword to than attach to the hilt of my replica sword after I hack saw the blade off.

Plus many dont notice this but Barbossa has a leather fingerless glove on his left hand. This is also done.

Check it out:

bbIMG_0001 actually has a “weight” like look to it now

bbIMG_0002

I moved the watch over alot and farther up so I had to resew the lobster clip if not it wouldnt be seen

bbIMG_0003 bbIMG_0004

connected to back and:

bbIMG_0005

“swishy part”

bbIMG_0006 bbIMG_0007 sleeve hole

bbIMG_0008 bbIMG_0009 bbIMG_0010

foam blade                                                                         split and sawed core to bolt on                        where its going

bbIMG_0011 bbIMG_0012 bbIMG_0013

I had to add strategic velcro and also had to cut odd shapes in the pleather to get it toy lie flat and look right. This actually tookk 2 days of work!

coat13 ok there was a rigid backing on the cuff to make it stay flat but it was too rigid it was never going to lie right  so I had to go back and cut out some of the interfacing to allow it to drape correctly

bbIMG_0014                               bbIMG_0015

cut out interfacing                                                                                                    laying correctly now

Ok thats it for now Once I get some help from my friend on the sleeves those will be next:

Barbossa_2  see I gotta have them split too

UPDATE 3/14

Hi Universe and Facebook Folks, Ok I’m moving forward with the costume I have the front lft & rght sides totally done lining pockets embroidery the entire thing so check it out below. I also just barely had enough lining to cover the back lft & rght sides and the “godots” aka the back of coat that will swish like a cape when I walk or dramatically draw my sword. Check it out:

coat10

ok the watch is being held up instead of by a pin now by a lobster claw jewelry clasp

I used super glue to lock in the fabric and stop frayed edges this was before I was told about a special thing just for that at Joanns SO I gotta use super glue on all the pockets so its all uniform . . .live and learn.

 UPDATE 3/1

Hi Universe well alot of work has been done check out the details on his coat.

The buttons made from the actual screen worn ones totally worth every penny!

The thing that I have noticed is online other cosplays of Barbossa the embroidery around the buttons was really sloppy. The material I used eliminated this and made them all uniform and all straight.

So what do you guys think?

UPDATE 2/16

Well I have finished 3 things.  The monkey Jack as you see below but also the Sash and the Vest.

BIMG_0001 (2)

Its the underside of the red vest fabric it has this greenish gold cast to it. I was going to just use the black inside lining for this part but thought the fabrics flip side was just to beautiful not to be used some place.

BIMG_0002 (2)

how awesome is this baldric ( sword sheath) very close to what he has on in the film

not bad for only my 3rd costume and the 1st made from scratch, dontcha think?

I did not put in a sub lining or middle layer though the pattern recommended it. You must remember this is for Colossal Con which takes place in JUNE so the lighter and more breathable the better

MORE DETAILS TO COME SOON

UPDATE 2/3

Ok you have to have Jack the monkey on your shoulder so here he is the finished Jack the monkey!

His little body is too small to put the buttons on but I thought I did pretty good

Update 1/26/15

Well I have now acquired all the material for my Barbossa costume and yes even Jack the monkey! Check it out

SO WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS?

IMG_0001 IMG_0002  here are the patterns that I’ll be tweeking

IMG_0003   leather for boot tops IMG_0004  brown leather for Vest lapelIMG_0005  fabric and tassel placement for sashIMG_0006  tassels

IMG_0007 coat and all linings and vest backIMG_0008  vest fabricIMG_0009  up close vest fabric

I know that this is more red and his vest is more brownred but I decided for a much more fancy pattern

and a grander look for him

IMG_0010  vest and sash compliment nicelyIMG_0011  semi shiny pants fabric

IMG_0012    eggshell or light creme shirt fabricIMG_0013 coat trimIMG_0014  button and trim

IMG_0015 button and trim on coat

IMG_0016  leather suede like coat cuff fabricIMG_0017  head bandanna

yes its not a darker blue grey but like the vest I’m going for slightly brighter so as to pop onstage and while walking around cons

IMG_0018  Pocket watch and piratey accessories

IMG_0019

now I cant wear a modern watch so I’m going with this its actually a pocket watch on a necklace chain but I’ll be attaching a pocket watch chain and retrofitting it to hang off the vest. an into a pocket I’ll be adding to the vest

IMG_0020  Jack the Monkey

yep he is a Capuchin just like the film one

article-1384761-0BF4517D00000578-778_306x423 monkey

this is the original vest fabric I was going to use, but its screen-printed not sewn

while the red one is sewn and more opulent so Jack the monkey is getting this fabric instead

IMG_0021 IMG_0022

now you can really see the difference between the 2 fabrics here, its a pretty easy choice when you look at it

IMG_0023 buttons for vestIMG_0024  closeup buttonsIMG_0025  real replica sword and pendantIMG_0026 close up pendantIMG_0027 563 out of 2500

Yes I know steel swords at con is a no no so what I’m doing is attaching the hilt  to a Larp  sword with a similar blade

 Update 1/8

Hi well I have found a few things and thought I would share.

First off one thing that is at least for now is the ring that Barbossa wears and unlike Jack he wears only one.

download  barbossaring2  Now that’s a ring right!

Ok first off this is a lion head not a bear I found this out through some of my research. The detail on the outer edges is fantastic.

Now I have looked and looked and haven’t found any replicas or anything on etsy. But I did find this:

Men's Hexagon Lion Ring in Stainless Steel  Ok first issue its the wrong color.  Easily fixed.

Next issue its not oval. Cant fix that.

Selling point to me: it has a lion head similar and pops off the face of the onyx stone just like the other one.

Its no were near as detailed but the dimples around the onyx gives a touch  or nod to the other ring.

So what do you guys and gals think?

Ok next thing is Barbossa’s ear ring.  Yes he does wear one and its not well known. I had no idea till I started my charector research on it. But he does and this is it:

24f03affa6ba7b3fbb346606a154527e  This is a wolf tooth .

In my mind this makes sense because I see Barbossa as a major apex predator on the high seas.

Now your not gonna find a wolf tooth earring in Kay jewelers but etsy is a different story

Wolf Fang Earrings on Gunmetal Filigreed Bead Caps & Pyrite Crystals - Bone Earrings / Genuine Fang Earrings

this is a wolf tooth  but more ornate then the real one

Authentic Coyote Fang Earrings

this is a coyotte tooth and is very simplistic and I could dress it up or more like distress it

Now either solution requires some tinkering bc I don’t have pierced ears and would have to attach a ear cuff to the hanging post.

Now I will be picking up my coat fabric on sat and actualy got a really great bolt of fabric yesterday for the vest.I’ll have info and pictures of that after I pick up the other fabric.

So What Do You Guys Think?

Close Enough to the Real Stuff?

Update 1/4

Hi Universe well I say the devil is in the detials and its the little things that make a big ddifference

Well Buttons will make a HUGE ddifferencefor this costume. I have found thanks to ebay the buttons used for the original Barbossa costume. Now these are reforged buttons that were crafted by a company after they spoke to the aactuallycostuming group that made all of the costumes for the Curse of the Black Pearl.

Here is the story from them

SO WE WENT TO THE SOURCE THAT THE ORIGINAL COSTUME BUYERS FOR ALL THREE FILMS HAD USED IN THE U.K.. THEY WERE GREAT, VERY CORDIAL, WE HAD A FEW LAUGHS….BUT NO MORE BUTTONS ANYWHERE, IT SEEMS THAT PENNY ROSE & STAFF HAD PURCHASED EVERY LAST BUTTON FOR ALL THE COSTUMES ON THE SHOOT AND TAKE MY WORD FOR IT THEY LOOKED IN EVERY LAST CORNER OF THE STORE. AS LUCK HAS IT THE CAPTAIN BARBOSSA FROCK COAT BUTTONS WERE AN OLD LOT AND WERE NOT REORDERABLE SO WE GOT AS MANY DETAILS THAT COULD BE REMEMBERED ABOUT THE BUTTONS ALONG WITH OUR OWN EXTENSIVE RESEARCH ON THE COSTUME. WHAT WE CAME UP WITH FROM LOTS OF TRIAL AND ERROR IS WHAT WE THINK IS A SPOT ON REPLICA OF THIS WARDROBE ITEM”

Well I want to win with this costume or at least get an honorable mention so you better believe the buttons WILL BE MINE!

Here they are 38 of them!

Now in addition to these I also found the necklace that he wears

barbossasnake preaty nice right?!?!

Now a crucial part of the costume is the squares top buckle that is on his chest. I have found one that is very close but is the wrong color I will paint and distress it but take a look not bad right!

Vintage Black Suede Leather Belt Gold Ornate Victorian Buckle

Like I said its the little things that matter!

Update 12/31

Ok here is the fabric that I have spoken of (blown up) and check out these pics they are of the actual screen worn costume and it is currently residing in London’s’ Prop Store Museum :

 http://www.propstore.com/cms/the-prop-store-collection/pirates-of-the-caribbean/captain-barbossa-costume/

2014-12-13 15.53.14 2014-12-13 15.52.47 Preaty close huh!?

Now I gotta mention the back of the coat because most of the cosplay stores online where you can buy there coat is way off when you look at the back. Notice the button placement and the fabric folds allowing the costume when fighting to flow almost like a cape. The final fight in the cavern at the end of the movie shows this off beautifully.  Also note the pants how they are puffy leading down to the knees were they taper in for the boots but also have these nice folds showing a touch more style and pomp to Barbossa outfit.

Here is the description from

“The costume in the Prop Store collection is from the first movie and was originally purchased from Disney directly. All the components are marked for Rush and are either labelled “hero” or “#1”. The pistol is a film used stunt rubber gun and the distinctive necklace is also a film worn piece. The only replicas here are the striking yellow sash, the belt and the sword these have been added purely to complete the presentation.”

“The hat, complete with colorful feathers is labelled Geoffrey Rush and has a sewn in blue bandana. It is made from suede and dyed black. The red, green and gold waistcoat is elaborately finished and covers a plain white cotton shirt. The most conspicuous element of the costume is the long frock coat which is finished in a green silver colour with countless black dots embroidered throughout. The sleeves end in large convoluted cuffs and elegant brass buttons.”

12/6 Update

Barbossa fabric found!

Hi universe well just by chance I ran into the fabric that I would use to craft barbossa’s jacket

Barbossa_2   2014-12-13 15.52.47

(here is the fabric I found and its not spot on but its pretty darn good I think)

his jacket is actually a dark grey  but it appears black

The pattern is simple enough its a checkerboard like fabric little black dots in a straight pattern

The fabric I found is black checkerboard no dots just recessed squares unless I find the actual fabric this is going to be as close as it gets. It will be a bit darker then this but most of the scenes in the movie looks black not dark grey so I doubt anyone could tell

So Far he is also the only one to have received a vote so far

 11/24

Ok I have finished my Harry Potter Fest and since my fav charecter was in it very  little due to him Dying  I must add yet another possibility to my next project

Sirius Black

black He has 2 main outfits one he wore with a beautiful full length purple coat and the 3/4 brown duster version

black2 each one has a different color and pattern shirt

You can go without the tattoos and leave your shirt butoned up all the way or you can have them showing with that extra button not made

then there is the wand

Yes this is a fairly easy costume to make and their is not alot to it but again I’ve always loved this movie and wanted to do it!  Plus another really cool hat and props!

What I could do is rig up the Phurba dagger to “fly” over my shoulder using my telekinesis  so it looks like its trailing behind me.

Joker UPDATE 10/6 Finished

Hi Universe here is the finished product wicked cool huh!?!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Joker UPDATE: 9/19

Hi universe here are the in-progress pics of the costume. Don’t freak out the Coat appears purple only in direct sunlight just like the game coat does. And I haven’t added the black accents to the collar and cuffs yet so don’t freak out were working from a all black coat that is now semi purple and going from their.

IMG_0012   cuting table and rreference photos

IMG_0009  pleather black pieces for shoulders and cuffs and collar   IMG_0008   felt pattern traced

IMG_0004     shell used as base

IMG_0005 poker table felt sewn over shell ( notice card suits)

IMG_0006 1/2 vest

IMG_0007

tux pants with black stripe ( yes the game had plain black) but this looks better and is a eaiser starting point for his future puprle pin stripe tux pants

IMG_0010 2 of 4 vest buttons a little fancier then plain green on refrence pics

IMG_0011 purple handkerchief for breast pocket I added. Will be going with a black one instead to tie in other black elements

IMG_0001  IMG_0002  IMG_0003

yep it was a real leather black trench coat to start then it got the front cut to make it like tails and then painted the purple that is black in low light and bright purple in direct light.

COOL POINT: the color spray that I cose for the Joker green hair actually glows under a black light so yes the joker is ready at any moment for a rave!

check out the awesomeness that is joker!

 Joker Refrences

Hi ladies and gentlemen here is our very own clown prince of crime.

I will be entering this costume into the Akron Comic Cons Masquerade this coming November, Based on pics I’ve seen online I can win if I pay attention to the details!

I have not only pics of him but also key prop elements to show off and to see what you think, so don’t be shy what am I missing ? Got any pointers?

batman_arkham_origins_the_joker_by_armachamcorp-d6rrake

As you can see this is not our typical joker getup yet some of the key colors are their just more muted

Clothes

  • Coat- black leather but it has a hint of purple to it ( I’ll probably use a light splatter effect to show that small hint of purple)
  • vest- green card suites not an easy pattern to find
  • pants- black flat front non pinstripe
  • Shoes- black shoes with white spats
  • Gloves- black form fitting
  • Coat lining-  its set in winter so its a quilted lining which is to heay and hot for conventions BUT notice the color a muted purple that can be a fun eye catcher as I walk by

su-feltgr

Believe it or not this is actually poker table felt. Anybody know the best way to work this material into a vest?

Smilecknwp

Face

  • permawhite skin-tone
  • scaring around lips and mouth  { tip of the hat to Heaths scarred Joker from Dark Knight}
  • smeared red lipstick { tip of the hat to Heaths scarred Joker from Dark Knight}
  • light purple with a touch of green eye shadow
  • not an elongated nose which is usually the norm
  • slightly exaggerated chin
  • green eyes

jocz-batman-arkham-origins-joker-1

How useful is this pick!

Notice the cut of his trench-coat, it is modeled after is traditional tail coat so it sweeps back starting mid thigh

joker

Large magnum styled gun not quite as long a barrel as some versions but that can be played with some

Props

I am adding to his arsenal from the game, he used just the gun and the crowbar, so I’m tossing in a classic with the joy-buzzer ring plus my version of his joker venom delivery system

  • Gun
  • Joker Venom
  • Crow Bar
  • Joy Buzzer Ring

L56470-joker-gun-72180

Now this is a different version I found online and the length of the barrel is more like a classic over-sized joker gun and can be modified to be longer still

$(KGrHqVHJ!sE-gEE1vDFBPupis!OG!~~60_35

This isn’t to bad to start with, I think I could get 2 and lengthen the barrel, and it has the safety orange tip that is required at conventions so solid to start what do you think?

UPDATE: I also want to incorporate into the gun prop the bang prop. What I’ll probably do is take it apart and MackGuyver it all together

Has anyone worked with these before and can give me some advice?

banggun

UPDATE: I think I will be adding in Joker grin grenades, they will have the smeared look like Heaths Joker not the clean joker face from the Animated serries

Although mad props to the Animated Series (WHICH I  LOVE)

heath-ledger-joker-grenade

This is a cosplay companies product that is the Set Up From Heaths Joker

joker_hand_grenade_by_zombiesatemylawyer-d36ot7e

This is a really cool Joker Grenade from the animated serious which is the concept I am after.

But swapped with just the grin form this pic Since the Arkham origins joker has the scared lips as well it works out

Hand Buzzer- What Can I say its green and shocks you fun for me  not so much for you hahahaha

I’ll probably alter the other side to make it look like a ring instead of just a key chain like loop
